State of the Club ~ 2023

First, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for being a part of the Faribault Soccer Club!  The mission of the Club is:

“The mission of the Faribault Soccer Club (referred to as FSC) focuses on the best interest of all youth participants in soccer.  FSC helps all youth participants develop their skills as soccer players to the best of their capabilities and to gain an appreciation of the game of soccer as a team player.  FSC strives to inspire youthful participants with the fundamental principles of teamwork and fair play, while having a focus on fun.”

I’m happy to report that we continue to see a recovery from the covid years.  Our membership showed tremendous growth last year and we hope to keep trending upwards.  We showed overall growth of almost 20%, with numbers increasing from 338 to 405! The largest increases were in our ‘Feat’ programs and Academy Soccer.  This bodes well for sustaining and growing the  program and continuing to give all players a place to play.

The second year of the league had some improvements, both in setup and league dynamics.  I trust it will continue to improve.  There is discussion at the league level for adding a level or two (ie, u13) if numbers warrant, and having League Championship Tournaments in lieu of travelling to St. Cloud for a state tournament.  More on that as it unfolds.

The mission of the SMSL is:

“The Southern Minnesota Soccer League (SMSL) serves established and growing soccer communities of Southern Minnesota. SMSL provides competitive leagues in classic levels of Black and Blue (Black the higher designation). SMSL also focuses on developmental ages 10U and younger and provides recreational soccer registration services. SMSL is committed to providing quality traveling soccer experiences while fostering and growing soccer throughout the region.”

Our Board has been very active this year adapting to the changing landscape.  Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to a number of key Board Members, so have openings and are always looking for help to steer the direction of the Club.  Your time and talents are needed.  We have open positions on the Board if you would like a voice in steering the future of the Club.  Keith Kramer and Nick Voit stepped away after years of valuable service, and Angie Robb and Luis Madrid relocated to Texas after the season.  We wish them all nothing but the best!  We do have a couple of new Board Members that joined this year ~ Leslie Johannsen and Kira Anderson.  We still have need for you!

After Co-oping last year, both Northfield and Faribault were able to field teams on their own this year.  Faribault grew by one travelling team this year.

Speaking of travelling, all of our teams had success this past season.

  • Boys u18 Black ~ 5 - 3 – 2 and finished in 4th place in a strong league
  • Boys u16 Black ~ 8 - 1 – 1 and finished in 2nd place, behind an undefeated Minnesota Rush team.  They also competed in the MYSA State Tournament (overall record of 9 – 3 – 2)
  • Boys u14 Blue ~ 6 – 4 – 0 and finished in 4th place.  After a rough start to the season, the team came on strong, ending on a 5 game winning streak!
  • Boys u12 Blue ~ 7 – 2 – 1 and finished in 2nd place.  Started the season with 5 straight wins
  • Girl’s u15 ~ They played as a Tournament team so didn’t play a league schedule.     They finished the season 4 – 4 – 0, including winning the Championship in the All American Cup at the National Sports Center!
  • Girl’s u14 Blue ~ 7 – 1 – 1, Champions of their league.  Congratulations!

Finally, costs are always a factor in activities we do.  Although the FCS has the lowest fees of any Club in the area, we still see this as a challenge for many.  We are working to bring some new initiatives to help keep or lower costs to make soccer affordable for everyone.  Some of these initiatives include incorporating volunteering, fundraising and jersey sponsors. If you have any ideas, please share them.   We are starting a Club Fundraising initiative, garnering support from local businesses.   As you see this come to pass, please support the businesses that support us!  We are also going to be adding the Papa Murphy’s cards at the beginning of the season as a mandatory fundraiser.  This will give families help in offsetting costs.   Lastly, we plan to open registration early, in concert with the end of the High School Fall season, to allow families to further spread registration cost over a longer timeframe.   Uniforms, new this year, will be used next year so you will not need to purchase new kits unless your soccer player outgrew or lost theirs.

Our switch to a “Club” has been successful.  As a reminder, this name change has significant meaning in that it raises expectations – of the Club, the players, and the parents.  The key area we are looking for growth and improvement this next season is in the commitment by all.  The commitment to not only attend but also give 100% at both practices and matches.  Player, parent, coaches, and Club commitments, attitude and effort not only impact your soccer player, but all the players on the team.

Thank you again for participating this season and we are already planning for next year!  Watch for .information, especially around some of the initiatives to make soccer affordable for all ~ it is, after all, the most popular sport, by a wide margin, in the world!

Please reach out to any Board member with questions or suggestions!

Best Regards,

Jason Johannsen, President

State of the Club ~ 2022

October 7, 2022

First, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for being a part of the Faribault Soccer Club!  The mission of the Club is:

“The mission of the Faribault Soccer Club (referred to as FSC) focuses on the best interest of all youth participants in soccer.  FSC helps all youth participants develop their skills as soccer players to the best of their capabilities and to gain an appreciation of the game of soccer as a team player.  FSC strives to inspire youthful participants with the fundamental principles of teamwork and fair play, while having a focus on fun.”

After a couple of years dealing with the impacts and restrictions based on the Global Covid19 pandemic, I’m happy to report that we were able to return to the pitch this year and provide meaningful games, opportunities for betterment and growth, learning opportunities, and fun.

There have been quite a few changes over the past year, and as we navigate these changes, please know that the overall goal is to grow the club and provide more opportunities for all of our players.  One of the key changes this year was joining the Southern Minnesota Soccer League (https://www.southernminnesotasoccer.com/).

The first year of the league had some growing pains, but I believe a foundation is being laid that will only improve our programming in future years.  The league is comprised of 21 Clubs from Southern Minnesota.  Overall, our teams performed well, and we look forward to continued improvement and competitive matches in the years to come.

2022 also brought along the first season of Academy Soccer.  This is also an initiative of SMSL.  The Faribault Academy is a transition program between our continuing successful Tiny / Little Feat program and full-fledged traveling.  It is focused on skills development with minimal travel, to nearby clubs for ‘Soccer Saturday’ events – one day friendlies to get a taste of travelling.  As with most things, there were some growing pains that should make future events better.  Faribault also plans to host a Soccer Saturday next season.  After this initial year of Academy, the Soccer Saturdays will shift from a jamboree format to more of an ‘Academy’ approach in scheduling, fields, rules, and officials.

Our Board has been very active this year in transitioning to the new league, building teams and running the program.  We are always looking for help to steer the direction of the Club.  Your time and talents are needed.  We have open positions on the Board if you would like a voice in steering the future of the Club.

For the first time, we had to develop a Co-op relationship with the Northfield Soccer Club.  Northfield was a great partner in setting up teams for girls u12, u16 and u18.  This was done out of necessity for both clubs, in order to give players an opportunity to continue their soccer careers.

Costs are always a factor in activities we do.

This year, we switched from an “Association” to a “Club”.  This name change has significant meaning in that it raises expectations – of the Club, the players, and the parents.

Watch for information, especially around some of the initiatives to make soccer affordable for all ~ it is, after all, the most popular sport, by a wide margin, in the world!

Faribault Soccer Club

Welcome to the New Faribault Soccer!

Welcome to our New Web Page!  Please browse and check out the content, more will continue to be added!  In addition to this, we wanted to let families of current and future soccer players know of some exciting new changes with our program!

First, we are switching our website to a new, hopefully more informative and easier to use site.  The new site, using SportsEngine design and hosting service, is a popular youth sports webservice that many Associations and Youth Sports Organizations are using.  It allows you to seamlessly link accounts for various sports and groups.  It will also make registration seamless and provide more information for you as members of the Faribault Soccer Community.

Second, we are pleased to announce that Faribault Soccer is joining the Southern Minnesota Soccer League (SMSL).  This League is made up of South of the Metro teams, following the “Hwy 14 Corridor” and promises to reduce travel and have competitive leagues.  We are excited to be part of this new league, which has also been joined by almost all regional and Big Nine communities.

Third, we are starting a new program, called the Faribault Soccer Academy.   This program, for 9 and 10 year-old players, will be a bridge between our hugely successful Little Feat Program and full traveling soccer in the new SMSL.  The focus of the academy is skill development with decreased travel to help the transition and respect the time of our families.  The Academy would most likely participate in a couple of one day weekend mini tournaments with other Academy programs, within 25 miles of Faribault.

The goal of these changes is to allow our players to experience the fun of soccer while building on skills and learning teamwork in a positive environment.  Having programs that take our youth from the young age of 3 and 4 (Tiny Feat), all they way to High School (Faribault Falcons Boys and Girls High School) will help learn skills, build camaraderie and improve not just the level of soccer in our community, but grow the game and nurture our players to be the best they can be.
